Orthodontics, the branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment and prevention of mal-positioning and correction of teeth and jaws, uses a wide variety of treatments to achieve the objective. Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment used in correcting misaligned teeth. Unlike braces, Invisalign is removable and does not force people to change their lifestyle significantly.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign, also known as clear aligners are custom made to correct misaligned teeth. The aligners are changed biweekly for a period of six to eighteen months. This span can vary depending on the severity of misalignment. These clear aligners are custom designed using computer generated molds created using teeth impression of the patient. Thus, every Invisalign is designed for a specific set of teeth. A new mold is created every two weeks to accommodate the shift caused by the previous one.

Invisalign holds some advantages over traditional metal braces. With Invisalign, patients can easily take out the aligners to eat, brush, and 􀁼oss their teeth. Because the aligners are transparent, the patients using Invisalign do not have to face the embarrassment that otherwise comes with metal frames and wires. The clear aligners maintain the natural look of the smile while augmenting and beautifying it even more as they straighten the teeth. Besides these advantages, it is gentle on the skin, and unlike braces doesn’t harm your mouth.

Is Invisalign the Right Option?

While Invisalign has its share of advantages, the treatment is not suited to every situation. Clear aligners are most commonly used for the following problems:

  • Crowding
  • Gap between teeth
  • Mild underbite, overbite, crossbite and open bites

Every individual has unique orthodontic issues and therefore, should consult an orthodontist to determine the best course of procedure for correcting it.
